Taoyuan Psychiatric Center is the earliest established psychiatric institute in Taiwan. Its predecessors Yoseiin (養神院) was founded in the Japanese ruling era (1934) by Taiwan Sotofuku (台灣總督府) as the first public mental hospital in Taiwan.
The name changed from previous Japanese-style to a Chinese one, ‘Siah-khau’ sanatorium (錫口療養院), after the administration shift in 1945. The whole hospital moved to current position in Taoyuan city in 1979, and therefore the organization was renamed again as Taoyuan Mental Hospital (TMH).
An impressive leap in both academic and clinical service performance took place after TMH contracted with the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) for close cooperation and education program in 1983. Hsu Chen-Chin, Chen Chu-Chang, Lin Hsin-Nan, and Hwu Hai-Guo were the four Professor-Superintendents from NTUH and they built up the foundation of modern TMH.
